New implementation offers advantages of network booting to users of laptops, embedded devices and older desktop PCs.
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, January 23, 2003 – Argon Technology announces the global release of PXE on Disk™, a floppy disk and CD version of their popular Managed PC Boot Agent™ (MBA) firmware. PXE on Disk brings the many benefits of network booting to networked devices that are not natively supported by PXE boot agents. This includes most laptop computers and older desktops. With network booting, network administrators can deploy new operating systems, and perform a number of administrative tasks, over the network.
Previously, the PXE client was available only as a Network Interface Card (NIC) option ROM or integrated as part of the PC’s main BIOS. Not all systems and network cards supported PXE option ROMs. As well, some devices such as laptop were not compatible with the standard ROMs. Argon’s PXE on Disk™ solves these problems by providing PXE on a floppy disk or CD.
“New technologies such as Microsoft’s Remote Installation Services require PXE clients. Argon PXE on Disk quickly provides PXE functionality to client devices that are not PXE-compliant,” says Lee Hollister, Argon Technology’s Technical Services Manager. “With PXE an operating system or application can be installed on a computer over the network, without physically having to visit the computer. That means less travel time and increased productivity.”
With the new floppy (or CD) disk-based version, virtually any client can boot from the network. The disk-based boot agent supports a wide range of NICs, including: ISA, PCI, USB, MiniPCI and PC Cards.
By providing every non-PXE compliant machine with PXE on Disk, administrators can easily add the benefits of centrally deployed management tools to their entire install base.
PXE on Disk can be purchased online for $15.99 US. Full details are available at http://www.ArgonTechnology.com/mbadisk/.
Argon also offers a licensed OEM version that allows vendors of desktop management software to integrate PXE on Disk into their applications. Their customers can then create an unlimited number of PXE boot disks, as well as IBM RPL, NetWare (802.2, 802.3, Ethernet II) and TCP/IP (DHCP or BOOTP) network boot protocols.
More Network Booting Products from Argon
Argon has also released three other network booting disks¾RPL on Disk™, DHCP on Disk™, and BOOTP on Disk™. Similar to PXE on Disk, these products support legacy network booting protocols.
Argon’s Client Management Services® (CMS) software, released last year, also includes a Client Boot Disk Creator utility that allows administrators to create network-boot floppy disks. This boot disk supports various ISA, PCI, USB adapters, MiniPCI and PC cards. Visit http://www.ArgonTechnology.com/cms/ to learn more.
